Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a National Key University with science and engineering as its core and has developed with management, liberal arts, economy, law and other disciplines.

HIT was established in 1920 in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. In 1954, HIT became one of China’s first six leading universities.

Currently, HIT is a member of China’s top nine University Union (C9).

HIT is steadily moving towards the goal of becoming a world-class university.

International Development of HIT

HIT is committed to international development by expanding partnerships with top universities globally and offering collaborative opportunities for cutting-edge research.

Led by partnerships with institutions in Russia, the university works to strengthen its links with partners in the Europe, Japan and South Korea. It has also established concrete cooperative links with world-class universities such as the University of Cambridge, the Imperial College London and the Technical University of Munich for student exchange, academic exchange and international conferences.

International education is core to the teaching and learning activities at HIT.

Guided by the goals set for developing HIT as a “Double First-class” university, the university aims to foster top innovative talents for the future with a global vision and leadership capacities.

HIT is actively engaged in developing joint colleges and programmes through Sino-foreign cooperation in education. This includes Shenzhen International School of Design through partnership between HIT and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), and other joint programmes following the “1+N” model.

Currently, HIT is home to 1,011 international students from 89 countries. 91.5% of them on degree programmes at the undergraduate, Master’s and doctorate levels.

HIT has a well-established academic system with interdisciplinary strength in Engineering and Technology. Renowned as “the cradle of engineers,” the university has many FIRSTs:
  • 1st School of Astronautics in China
  • 1st Chinese university to independently develop and enter small satellites into the moon’s orbit
  • 1st to achieve satellite ground laser communication link communications
  • 1st computer to play chess and talk with people
  • 1st university to produce arc- and spot welding robots.
  • 1st university to reveal the virulent factor of the HIV virus
  • 1st university to achieve a major breakthrough in supporting structure development for the largest radio telescopes
